Not alone in changing the model

T. Scott Plutchak   (30 June 2005)  University of Alabama at Birmingham email

Biomedical Digital Libraries is to be applauded for its commitment to providing an open access venue for high quality, peer reviewed library literature. However, it is certainly not alone, nor is it the first, to attempt to change "the way in which peer-reviewed library literature is published." It is equally the case for the Journal of the Medical Library Association that "following blinded peer review, all accepted articles are accessible online without the barrier of subscription or cost, and the author(s) retain copyright for their work..." This has been the case since 2001. The funding models, of course, are different. JMLA is funded through advertising and subscription fees associated with its print version, and does not have any article processing charges. There are many roads to open access, and librarians should support as many as possible in as many ways as they can.
